Workplace Mediation

Mediation is getting people to the table, helping them to listen and inviting them to collaborate. 

Mediation is a non-adversarial conflict resolution process where a third party professional, who has no authority in making binding decisions for the parties in disagreement, intervenes in the dispute in order to:

  • Improve the working relationship

  • Enhance and strengthen communications

  • Use effective problem-solving and negotiation tools to reach a mutually acceptable understanding or an agreement on the disputed issues

For example, conflict among the team members may represent a lack of listening skills, effectiveness or clarity in saying what we feel, think, or want. In mediation, as parties listen closely to each other and when they can tell each other clearly and skillfully what they need, they understand the true interests of the other party and are often able to have their needs met without conflict. It is also possible that conflict represents the cracks in the system, manifestation of contradictory forces coexisting together, or organizational structures that need to be addressed. Many interpersonal conflicts represent the points of weakness in an organization and when parties begin to address these in mediation, the conflict the systems created usually disappears.

  1. Confidential
    Mediation is a confidential process.

    Everything said in intake, individual or joint sessions will remain between the mediators and the parties, unless the said information represents an immediate threat of safety to anyone. 

  2. Fair
    Mediation hinges on a fair and a balanced process.

    The neutrality of the mediator(s) is part of the method which supports a fair and a just approach to the problems at hand by separating the persons from those problems.

  3. Collaborative
    Mediation focuses on common interests. 

    By helping the parties highlight their interests as opposed to their positions, we will facilitate a collaborative approach of addressing the parties’ shared interests and generate solutions of addressing the issues. 

  4. Solution-Focused
    Mediation focuses on the desired outcomes.

    By creating agenda items, we will focus and work through the specifics of the dispute all with the goal of reaching a durable agreement going forward.
